The Federal Trade Commission is requesting public comments on the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule. In particular, the FTC is seeking feedback on the effectiveness of its 2013 amendments to the COPPA Rule and on whether additional changes are needed. Comments are due October 23, 2019. The FTC will also be hosting a COPPA workshop on October 7, 2019.

NTIA Seeks Comment on New, Outcome-Based Privacy Approach
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) issued a Request for Comments (RFC) on a new consumer privacy approach that is designed to focus on outcomes instead of prescriptive mandates. The RFC presents an important opportunity for organizations to provide legal and policy input to the administration, and comments are due October 26.
FTC Seeks Public Comment on Safeguards Rule
The FTC today announced a request for public comment on the Standards for Safeguarding Consumer Information Rule. The FTC promulgated the Safeguards Rule in 2002, implementing Title V of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act , which required federal agencies to establish standards for the administrative, technical, and physical safeguards employed by financial institutions for certain information. In addition to general requests for comment, the FTC requested that five specific issues be addressed, which we have outlined below. Comments are due by November 7, 2016.
